Many would argue the best of times are usually on the water with friends. Don and Bonnie visited us at PS Bass Guide Service last week for spicy Bengali Curry, tour of our tree nursery, and of course–Bass fishing on Lake Toho! Our adventure began on some mid-lake “schoolers” in the 2-3 pound range and ended in and around the mouth of Shingle Creek. After five hours, we estimated catching over thirty bass with the largest at 5+. This was probably our best day together dating back to 2001 when our friendship began at Rosco’s Bait and Tackle–his family owned business. After a three year tour with the Army Reserve Todd R. Cornell NCOA, Ft. McCoy and a stint at Ft. Bragg, I returned to Ft. McCoy for another tour and began tournament fishing again with Don. We fished the BFL Tournament trail together starting from Pool 4 to Pool 10 on the Mississippi River. Don is no stranger to Florida Strain Large Mouth Bass or catching-up on local family–his passion fishing Redman tournaments started while living in Jacksonville Florida during the 80’s.
While Don was on board, I asked him for some fishing techniques on the use of a Rapala Floating 6″ Minnow he gave me long ago. He said, reel down a couple of turns, jerk or twitch and allow the Rapala to float back to top, repeat. Wasn’t long before, boom! He lauded and I landed a four pound bass in the boat. Thanks Don for serving your country eight years in the Navy, your friendship, the tip, and visiting us during your Florida vacation.
